China's capital Beijing is full of culture: palaces, museums and
monuments.
The city has many places of historic interest and scenic beauty as the
Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace.
An easy daytrip
from Beijing is the The Great Wall of China,
the only man-made structure that can be seen from the moon. A
fortification that has been built from the 3rd century BC up until the
17th century.
The purpose
of the wall was to protect Chinese territory from raids by the Mongols
and other nomadic tribes.
Xi’an has a long history.
For twelve dynasties
it has been the capital of China and the starting point of the Silk Road
as well. Xi’an became famous by the Terra Cotta Warriors, a collection
of 8.099 real-size terra cotta figures located near the Mausoleum of the
First Qin Emperor.
The giant pandas are not only a Chinese national treasure, they are also
beloved by people all over the world.
Therefore a visit to the Chengdu
Panda Breeding Research Center is a MUST see.
Old Lijiang is a UNESCO world heritage
site, which is well known for its sound preservation of ancient
buildings and the distinctive Naxi culture.
It feels like time travel to an ancient China. A fairytale!
Dali, first built in the Ming
Dynasty (1368-1644) has ancient buildings and city walls.
There are 25 ethnic minorities, which results in a unique cultural heritage
amidst the picturesque surroundings of mountains and the Erhai Lake.
The Karst mountains are very
beautiful in China. They can be viewed best from
Yangshuo, a small town close to
Guilin.
The Stone Forest is
situated 83km from Kunming (between Dali and Guilin) and it has many
different, almost magical, Karst formations.
It is one of the National Scenic Resorts in China and a natural wonder.
Hong Kong (the name means Fragrant Harbor) has developed from a small fishing
village in the 1800s into the dynamic cosmopolitan metropolis it is
today. Due to the very high population density, it is full of the
tallest skyscrapers. Hong Kong is also a major seaport and a true
shopper’s paradise. The city was handed back to the People's Republic of
China, by Great Britain in 1997.
